If you aren’t a fan of coffee, here is a good reason to appreciate the brew. A recent study from the University of Georgia shows that coffee can help relieve your muscle pain to as much as 50%. That is major pain relief! All you need to do is relax and drink two cups of coffee after your workout.
The study also shows a higher percentage of women get this benefit, especially those who are not regular coffee drinkers. This may simply be because the body is not used to the coffee unlike that of people who drink coffee 2 to 4 times a day.
In 2003, Professor Patrick O’Connor found that caffeine cuts down pain in the thighs that people get from cycling at moderate instensity. He began a new study, this time with Professors Gary Dudley and Kevin McCully. They have found that caffeine seems to block the body’s adenosine receptors. Adenosine is the chemical produced by the body in response to inflammation.
As always though, this is not a license to over indulge in your favorite brew. Coffee before exercise is still not recommended and it is still best to drink coffee in moderation. This is simply good news and motivation to get you back in the gym and back in shape.
